Why sniffing and not walking
Most walks get improvised and survived.
You get out, you turn round the corner, you get home, and you braced the whole way. She spends it being moved along passed things she needed a second longer with.
A sniff walk is the opposite. She sets the pace, so she gets to finish the sentences she starts. She gets the exercise she needs.

Duranton and Horowitz found in 2019 that dogs given nose work came out more optimistic than dogs doing structured heel work. More sniffing, not more exercise.

What is a sniff walk?
A short walk on a small patch of ground where your dog sets the pace and direction and you stop every time she stops. About twenty minutes. No special equipment and nothing the dog has to learn first. The point is not distance covered, it is uninterrupted time to gather information with her nose.
Do I need special equipment?
No. Use the leash and harness you already own. A longer leash gives her more room to move sideways, which helps, but nothing needs buying before tonight.
My dog reacts badly to other dogs. Is this still for us?
Yes, and it is the right first step. What changes for a reactive dog is where you do it and how much room she gets, not the method. Pick somewhere quiet and go early or late.
Twenty minutes seems too short to matter.
It will feel that way the first night. Sniffing is mentally expensive for a dog in a way that distance is not, so judge it by her body when you get home rather than by the clock.
